Homemade food gel paint with no artificial dyes! It’s a work in progress and a bit chunky when I got to the flowers, but I am pleased with the results this time! I think stirring it every so often, and keeping it warm will help with thinning it out a bit.
You will NEVER see me use artificial colors or preservatives in or on my sourdough. So although others may be much easier to use and have a crisper, paint-like look, I’ll stick with healthy and pretty!
2 tbs cornstarch + enough water to hydrate it.
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup organic cane sugar
1 Tsp lemon juice
Place cornstarch and enough water to hydrate it in a small bowl. Heat water, lemon juice, and sugar over medium until it dissolves, add cornstarch mixture and whisk until smooth and thick. Pour into 4 small ramekins. Add Watkins natural food coloring of your choice to each ramekin. You can also add homemade color from beets, cabbage, Spirulina, turmeric, etc.
Paint on floured sourdough before baking. Cover the entire baking time to preserve color. 450 for 50 minutes covered using my Easy Sourdough recipe. Store in the refrigerator for a few days, and warm to thin out and use again.

Buon Appetito!
